All sorts of primates, not just the human variety, seem to have evolved bigger brains independent of other branches of the evolutionary tree.
South American monkeys, independent of the African monkeys, also evolved bigger brains. This suggests that there is something deep in our genetics way down in the family tree that moves towards greater intelligence.
